Shot At Success

November, 2017

This documentary was my final student film project for my undergraduate media degree at the University of Cape Town.

I directed this documentary, which looked at what makes a school successful, despite the odds of being nestled in a notoriously dangerous suburb on the outskirts of Cape Town.

The documentary was shortlisted at two film festivals.

Personal reflections on the project

What I learnt

  • Relationship building is important in long-term projects. Working with subjects and a new team requires taking the time to build rapport with the people involved. Listen to what everyone has to say within their field of expertise.

  • Be clear on the project outcome. Making sure everyone has a clear idea of what the project is about helps to manage expecations when the final deliverable gets published.

  • Things always take longer than you think, for example editing. We underestimated how much time it would take to put the final documentary together, notwithstanding exporting it.

  3. If your project is something I know I can deliver excellent results for, I will set up a 15-minute video chat for us to discuss it further.
